The Maldives is a year-round diving destination, thanks to its tropical monsoon climate. However, the dry northeast monsoon season, spanning from November to April, is often preferred by divers, as water visibility can exceed 30 meters during this period.

The water temperature stays relatively consistent throughout the year, ranging from 26°C to 29°C.

Wanneer gaan?

De Malediven bieden het hele jaar door duiken, maar de ervaring kan variëren tussen de noordelijke en zuidelijke atollen.

In de noordelijke atollen (Male, Ari, Baa, Lhaviyani, enz.) zijn de beste duikomstandigheden meestal van november tot april, met kalme zeeën en uitstekend zicht. Het zeeleven, waaronder mantaroggen, rifhaaien en kleurrijke rifvissen, is er in overvloed, met walvishaaien die vaak worden gespot in het Zuid Ari-atol.

Tips voor reizigers

De lokale munteenheid is de Maldivische Rufiyaa (mvr). Amerikaanse dollars worden echter algemeen geaccepteerd op liveaboards in de Malediven.

Hoewel de meeste liveaboards wifi bieden, kunnen de verbindingssnelheden variëren. Als verbonden blijven van cruciaal belang is, overweeg dan om een lokale simkaart aan te schaffen.

Vervoer tussen eilanden gebeurt meestal per speedboot of watervliegtuig en moet van tevoren worden geregeld. Houd er rekening mee dat de vluchtuitvoering met watervliegtuigen eindigt bij zonsondergang.

Hoe er te komen & Havens van vertrek?

De Malediven zijn vanuit verschillende delen van de wereld per vliegtuig bereikbaar. De belangrijkste internationale toegangspoort van het land is Malé International Airport (ook bekend als Velana International Airport), gelegen op het eiland Hulhulé, in de buurt van de hoofdstad Malé.

Veel internationale luchtvaartmaatschappijen vliegen rechtstreeks naar Malé vanuit grote steden in Europa, Azië en het Midden-Oosten. Vanuit Noord-Amerika of Australië kunnen een of twee tussenstops nodig zijn.

De meeste liveaboard duikexpedities op de Malediven vertrekken vanuit Malé vanwege de nabijheid van een verscheidenheid aan uitstekende duiklocaties en atollen. Sommige liveaboards kunnen echter ook vertrekken van andere locaties zoals de atollen van Laamu of Gaafu Dhaalu, vooral die gericht op de zuidelijke atollen.
